Furniture fit: room-envelope calculator.
Enter manually supplied room and full furniture dimensions in metres, then choose each side clearance. This free tool compares one rectangular item with a rectangular room. It does not extract furniture dimensions from an image or scan.
How the envelope comparison works.
Remaining width = room width − oriented furniture width − left clearance − right clearance. Remaining depth = room depth − oriented furniture depth − front clearance − back clearance. A negative difference rejects the envelope on that axis. Both differences at or above zero mean only that this simplified envelope matches. Equality leaves no extra allowance on that axis; it is not a real-world fit approval. The tool does not choose a furniture position or distribute the remaining space.
A fictional example, including rotation.
Take a fictional room 3 m wide and 4 m deep, furniture 2 m wide and 1 m deep, and user-chosen clearances of 0.2 m left, 0.3 m right, 0.4 m front and 0.5 m back. Remaining width is 3 − 2 − 0.2 − 0.3 = 0.5 m; remaining depth is 4 − 1 − 0.4 − 0.5 = 2.1 m. Rotate the furniture by 90 degrees and its dimensions become 1 × 2 m: the remaining values become 1.5 m and 1.1 m. The clearances stay on the same room sides. These choices illustrate arithmetic, not recommended distances.
Record where every input came from.
Keep the room name, measurement date, operator, reference corner and outline version in your own notes with the copied result. For furniture, record the exact model and source of the full external width and depth, including protruding arms or legs. A seat width is not a full external width. Use a verified dimension sheet or your own measurement rather than guessing from a photograph. If an essential measurement is unknown, leave the calculation incomplete and obtain it first.
What the simplified rectangle leaves out.
OpenStax provides basic rectangular geometry formulas, but floor area alone cannot establish a placement. This calculator subtracts dimensions on two axes and does not model doors, door swings, radiators, irregular walls, other furniture or obstacles. It does not test drawers, recliners or working positions. A remaining strip is not a continuous walkway, and a room envelope does not test the delivery path through doors, stairs or turns. Check those separately in the actual setting before ordering or moving furniture.
Your clearances are not an accessibility standard.
Choose clearances for the specific comparison you want to make. Zero is permitted and means no allowance on that side; the initial zero values are not a recommendation. The US Access Board publishes ADA guidance for defined accessibility contexts. This calculator applies none of those requirements and gives no safety, accessibility or building-code approval. Where those questions matter, identify the applicable requirements and obtain an appropriate assessment.
Precision and next checks.
Inputs are plain decimal numbers in metres: room and furniture dimensions must be greater than zero and at most 1000; side clearances may be zero through 1000. Output uses up to ten significant digits, which does not establish measurement accuracy. Inputs are handled at computer precision. Differences between their decimal representations are calculated without a blanket tolerance that could conceal a small deficit. Editing any field or rotation clears the old result. Copy the result and add the unresolved checks to your own record; the image or model of an arrangement never proves fit.
About this calculation.
What does an envelope match mean?+
Both remaining dimensions are zero or positive after subtracting the oriented furniture and your chosen side clearances. It is only a simplified rectangle comparison, not real-world fit approval.
What changes when I rotate the furniture?+
A 90-degree rotation swaps the furniture width and depth. Left, right, front and back clearances remain attached to the same room sides.
Does zero clearance mean the layout is recommended?+
No. Zero means you have imposed no allowance on that side. You choose the clearances; the calculator supplies no universal minimum or safety, accessibility or code approval.
Does the tool check doors, drawers or the delivery route?+
No. Door and obstacle positions, furniture operation, a continuous walkway and delivery are separate checks. Obtain missing dimensions and inspect the actual setting before deciding.
